What it is
The longest muscle in the human body: a narrow, flat strap running from the bony point at the front of your pelvis, diagonally across the front of the thigh, to the inner side of the knee. It is a ribbon rather than a mass, and it can be several tens of centimetres long.
Its name comes from sartor, Latin for tailor. The traditional explanation is the cross-legged posture tailors once worked in, which is close to the position the muscle produces when all its actions happen at once.
At the knee it joins semitendinosus and gracilis to form the pes anserinus.
It forms the outer border of the femoral triangle, a landmark region at the top of the thigh containing the femoral artery, vein and nerve.
What it does
Four things, and its diagonal path is the reason. It flexes the hip, abducts it, rotates it outward, and flexes the knee.
Do all four at once and you arrive at the cross-legged sit — which is the mnemonic the name provides. It also describes what happens when you lift your foot to rest your ankle on the opposite knee.
It is a two-joint muscle, crossing hip and knee.
What loads it
Nothing loads it heavily or specifically, and it is not a strong muscle — it is long and thin, with a small cross-section. Its contribution to any movement is modest and shared.
It is loaded incidentally in lunging, stepping, and any movement combining hip flexion with external rotation.
What is commonly got wrong about it
That being the longest muscle makes it important for strength. Length and force are unrelated; force capacity tracks cross-sectional area, and this muscle has very little. It is long because it travels a long way, not because it is powerful.
That it can be trained deliberately. Every action it performs is performed more strongly by another muscle — iliopsoas flexes the hip, gluteus medius abducts it, the hamstrings bend the knee. Nothing selects it.
The tailor story as established fact. It is a plausible and very old explanation for the name, and it is repeated everywhere, but it is an etymological tradition rather than a documented one.
