Tibialis anterior
The muscle on the front of your shin that lifts your foot — and stops you tripping over it.

What it is
The prominent muscle on the outer side of the shin bone, and the strongest dorsiflexor of the ankle. It runs from the upper tibia down the front of the leg, its tendon crossing the front of the ankle and turning inward to attach under the arch of the foot.
Its tendon is the most obvious one on the front of your ankle. Pull your foot upward and you can see and feel it stand out.
It shares the anterior compartment of the leg with the toe extensors — a compartment bounded by tough fascia, which is relevant below.
What it does
Dorsiflexes the ankle — pulls the foot upward towards the shin — and inverts the foot, turning the sole inward.
Its most important job happens during walking, twice per step. In the swing phase it holds the foot up so the toes clear the ground. At heel strike it lowers the foot to the floor under control rather than letting it slap down.
Losing it produces foot drop, where the foot cannot be lifted and the person must either lift the knee high or swing the leg outward to clear the ground.
What loads it
Dorsiflexion against resistance, walking on the heels, and running — particularly downhill, where it works hard controlling the foot's descent.
The Repertoire contains no movement loading it yet, though squatting demands ankle dorsiflexion range, which is a different thing from loading the muscle.
What is commonly got wrong about it
"Shin splints" as a tibialis anterior problem. Medial tibial stress syndrome, the usual meaning of the phrase, involves the inner border of the tibia and is more associated with the deep posterior muscles than this one. And "shin splints" is a bucket term covering several distinct problems, one of which is a stress fracture — which is a reason to have persistent shin pain looked at rather than trained through.
That toe raises fix everything shin-related. They train the muscle. Whether that addresses a given person's shin pain depends entirely on what is causing it.
Compartment syndrome as a training goal. The anterior compartment's tough fascial boundary means swelling has nowhere to go. Acute compartment syndrome is a surgical emergency, and exertional compartment syndrome is a real condition — neither is something to self-diagnose, and severe, unrelenting shin pain with numbness needs urgent assessment rather than a website.
