Why spot reduction is not a thing

The belief that working a body part removes the fat over it — the single most profitable false idea in fitness, and the one this whole site is built to refuse.

What people are told

That exercising a part of your body reduces the fat on that part. Sit-ups for the stomach, tricep kickbacks for the backs of the arms, inner-thigh machines for inner thighs.

The idea is rarely stated this plainly, because stated plainly it sounds unlikely. It arrives instead as a promise attached to a movement: an exercise "for" a region, a programme "targeting" an area, a machine positioned in a gym next to a mirror.

It is intuitive, it is old, and it is the commercial engine of an enormous amount of the industry.

What is actually known

It has been tested directly, and the cleanest test is the obvious one.

Twenty-four sedentary adults did seven abdominal exercises, five days a week, for six weeks, on a controlled diet. Abdominal endurance improved substantially — they got much better at the exercises. There was no significant effect on abdominal fat, abdominal circumference, or skinfold measurements at the waist.1

The physiological reason is not mysterious. Fat is mobilised from stores throughout the body and transported in the blood to where it is used. A working muscle does not preferentially consume the fat sitting on top of it, because that is not how the supply line runs. Where you lose fat from is governed by hormonal and genetic factors you do not choose and cannot direct.

The honest qualification, because this site does not close questions the evidence has not closed: a much smaller study reported that a mixed endurance-and-strength circuit did reduce abdominal subcutaneous fat.2 It was fourteen people, and a different intervention from isolated abdominal work. It is not enough to overturn the direct tests. It is enough that the careful claim is targeted exercise does not preferentially remove fat from the area worked rather than the question is closed forever.

What follows from that

Three things, and the third is why this article exists.

Exercise selection cannot be made on the basis of where you want to lose fat. That variable is not available to you. Choosing movements by that criterion means choosing them by a criterion that does nothing.

Training a muscle still does something. It makes it stronger and larger. That is a real result and a good one. It is simply not the result being sold.

A site organised around this belief would have to be organised around a lie. That is the structural consequence, and it is why Exercise With What has no browse-by-goal, no browse-by-body-part, and no way to get from a region of your body to a list of exercises. The absence is not an oversight or a design gap. It is the refusal, built into the data rather than written into the copy — and there is an automated test that fails the build if anyone ever adds it back.

What we still cannot say

We cannot say precisely where any individual will lose fat from, or in what order, because that varies between people and is not well predicted.

We cannot say that no localised effect exists at all under any protocol. The evidence says the effect is absent or negligible under the conditions that have been tested, which is not the same as proving a universal negative.

We can say that the version sold to people — do this movement, lose fat there — has been tested and does not hold, and that an industry has been built on it anyway.
