Why tendons adapt slower than muscle
The most useful single fact about getting injured — your muscles get strong faster than the tissue attaching them to bone.
What people are told
Usually nothing. This is not a claim people are given and it is not a myth being corrected — it is a piece of mechanism that would explain a large fraction of ordinary training injuries, and it is almost never mentioned.
What people are told instead is "warm up", "use good form", and "listen to your body", which are either vague or, in the first case, not well supported.
What is actually known
Muscle is richly supplied with blood and turns over quickly. Tendon and ligament are dense, comparatively poorly vascularised connective tissue, and they remodel much more slowly.
Both adapt to loading. Tendon does get stiffer and stronger with training. It simply does so on a longer timescale — muscle strength responds over weeks, tendon properties over months.
The consequence is a gap, and the gap is the point. Someone training hard can develop the muscular capacity to generate forces that the tendon has not yet adapted to transmit comfortably. Nothing about that feels dangerous at the time. The muscle is fine; the muscle is the part sending you feedback.
This is one reasonable explanation for why overuse problems so often appear in people who have recently increased their training, rather than in people training hard for years — and why "too much, too soon" is such a durable piece of advice.
The same logic applies to bone, which responds to mechanical loading more slowly again.
What follows from that
Rate of increase matters more than amount. A load that would be fine after three months of building up can be a problem in week two. The number is not the variable; the change in the number is.
Feeling fine is not evidence that the tissue has caught up. Muscular readiness arrives first and it is what you can perceive.
The tissue with the longest timeline should set the pace. In practice that means increasing gradually even when you feel capable of more — which is unsatisfying advice, and correct.
Movements that load tendon hardest deserve the most patience. Anything explosive, anything at long muscle length under load, and anything with a rapid stretch — jumping, sprinting, heavy lowering.
What we still cannot say
How long "slower" is for any individual. Estimates for tendon adaptation vary widely between studies and depend on the tissue, the loading and the person.
Whether the muscle-tendon gap is the primary cause of any particular injury. It is a plausible and widely discussed mechanism, and injuries are multifactorial — training load, sleep, prior injury and chance all contribute.
And nothing at all about a tendon that already hurts. That is a clinical problem, and this site does not address it.
