Dumbbell curl
Bending the elbow against weight — and which grip you use decides which muscle does most of it.

What it is
Stand holding a dumbbell in each hand, arms at your sides. Bend your elbows to bring the weights up towards your shoulders, then lower under control until the arms are straight.
Elbows stay roughly at your sides rather than travelling forward.
Three grips, and the difference between them is real:
- Palms up (supinated) — the standard curl
- Palms facing each other (neutral, "hammer")
- Palms down (pronated)
What it demands
Elbow flexion strength, and nothing else. This is an isolation movement and makes no pretence otherwise.
The interesting part is which muscle does the work, and it follows directly from anatomy rather than from opinion:
Biceps brachii attaches to the radius, the forearm bone that rotates. It is therefore strongest when the palm is up, and contributes much less when the palm faces down. Brachialis attaches to the ulna, which does not rotate, so its contribution is the same in every grip. Brachioradialis is best placed with a neutral, thumb-up grip.
So palms-up curling favours biceps; hammer and palms-down grips shift proportionally more work onto brachialis and brachioradialis. That is one of the better-founded exercise-selection claims in training, because it is a statement about attachment points rather than about sensation.
What usually goes wrong
Swinging. Using a hip and back movement to start the weight. It moves more; it trains less.
Elbows drifting forward. The elbow travels ahead of the body and the shoulder starts helping.
Not straightening at the bottom. Very common, and it removes the part of the range where the muscle is longest.
Treating it as a priority. The elbow flexors are loaded substantially in every pull — pull-ups, rows — and curls are an addition rather than a foundation.
Where it sits
An isolation movement, which makes it unusual in a collection built around patterns. It earns its place for the same reason the calf raise does: the mechanism behind its variations is clear and instructive, and it illustrates why knowing where a muscle attaches changes what you choose to do.
