What actually changes when you train
Strength arrives before size, and for the first stretch you are not building muscle so much as learning to use it.
What people are told
That training makes muscles bigger, and bigger muscles are stronger. Progress is therefore growth, and if you are not visibly growing, nothing is happening.
What is actually known
Several things change, on quite different timescales, and they do not arrive in the order people expect.
First, the nervous system. Early strength gains are largely neural — better recruitment of the muscle you already have, better coordination between muscles, less inhibition. This is why someone can add a great deal to a lift in the first weeks without measurably changing size, and why a movement gets easier long before anything looks different.
It is also why strength is partly a skill. Getting better at squatting involves getting better at squatting, not only at producing force.
Then, the muscle. Structural growth is slower. Fibres increase in cross-sectional area over months rather than weeks, and the rate depends on training history, age, food, sleep and genetics — with genuinely large variation between individuals doing identical programmes.
Then, everything slower still. Tendon and ligament adapt more slowly than muscle. Bone responds to loading more slowly again. The connective tissue timeline is the one nobody watches and the one that matters for staying uninjured.
And separately, the rest of it. Cardiovascular adaptation, capillary density, mitochondrial changes, improved insulin sensitivity, better balance and coordination. None of it is visible and most of it is more consequential to how long and how well you live than muscle size is.
What follows from that
Judging progress by appearance measures the slowest and least reliable variable available. What you lift, for how many, through what range, and how it feels are all responding sooner.
The first few weeks feel miraculous and then stop feeling that way. That is the neural phase being replaced by the structural one, not a programme failing.
Build load gradually, because your muscles adapt faster than the tissue attaching them. This is the practical reason behind almost all sensible progression advice, and it is the subject of its own article: why tendons adapt slower than muscle.
What we still cannot say
Exactly where the line falls between neural and structural change for any individual — the split is described in general terms and measured indirectly.
How much of anyone's response is genetic. It is clearly substantial, and studies of identical programmes find people who respond strongly and people who barely respond at all. Nobody can tell you which you are before you train.
And how much of "getting stronger" is skill versus tissue in any given lift, which is one of the more interesting unresolved questions in the area.
